During the Congress of Mercy to be held in Bogota, Colombia, from 27 to 30 August, Pope Francis will send a special video message, which will last at least 30 minutes. The message – reports Il Seismografo, a site close to the Holy See – is dedicated to the entire South American continent and has already been registered.
At the important international event, jointly organized by the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (Cal) and by the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), will be present the representative delegations of the 22 Bishops’ Conferences of the Latin American and several guests from US, Canadian and European Bishops Conferences. The Prelates of the Roman Curia and of ecclesial solidarity organizations in Latin America are also expected to partake in the event, through their support to numerous projects and national and diocesan initiatives.
The Congress will focus on the following topic: “May a great wind of holiness blow through the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in all the Americas!” It will be chaired by Cardinal Marc Ouellet, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of Cal, together with Cardinal Ruben Salazar Gomez, archbishop of the Colombian capital.
Three days to discuss and reflect on the gift and works of mercy, in which participants will not be dealing with theory alone. These, in fact, will visit several disadvantaged areas of the Colombian capital, where they will be able to see the mercy put at work by many charitable institutions and organizations of the local Church to help children, homeless, prostitutes, prisoners and the sick. The conference will open with a solemn opening Mass in the Bogota Cathedral and will end in the Portiuncula Chapel of the Miraculous in La Calera, a symbol of St. Francis and of poverty and attention to the poor, with a very significant gesture: the Continental Rosary for peace.
