A woman was arrested in Istanbul, suspected of belonging to the terrorist commandos responsible for yesterday’s attack at the Ataturk International Airport, the main airport of Turkey. There are three wanted people now, all of whom are foreign nationals. This detail might confirm that there is Isis behind this attack, a hypothesis taken for granted by Prime Minister Yildirim.
The current death toll is at 36. Besides, 147 people were injured. There seem to be at least one Iranian and one Ukrainian citizens among the victims. The Turkish Minister of Justice, Bekir Bozdag, said that two men were killed during a gunfight with the police, after the two of them had opened fire on the crowd. There are suspicions that there might be an indefinite terrorist organization behind them.
The Italian Foreign Ministry has set up an emergency unit and is following closely the developments concerning the attack to find out whether there are Italian citizens among those affected by the attack. In addition, some of Fiumicino airport sources have reported that Alitalia has blocked its flight from Rome to Istanbul after having received the news of the terrorist attack. The Italian national airline has announced that its crew is in the city, but at the time when the explosions occurred, their employees were in their hotel.
The first images uploaded by eyewitnesses of the attack and by other people present at the airport show wounded people on the ground, both inside and outside the terminal affected by the explosions. The Turkish authorities have forbidden showing pictures from the scene, a standard measure in emergencies in Turkey. The entrances and exits of the airport were closed. As a precaution, the airport (which is the third busiest in Europe) was evacuated. Arrival and departure flights have been suspended or diverted to other airports. The entire hotel will stay closed until 8 p.m. of Wednesday, June 29. Nobody has claimed the attack so far. Investigators are cautious about the nature of this terrorist attack, but one of the hypothesis is that there might be Isis behind it. Yet, the Turkish media mentioned only the suspicions of the police.
