The seminar “Women, Drugs and Violence in Europe and in the Mediterranean Region”, organized by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies (DAP) in collaboration with the Pompidou Group of the Council of Europe and held at Palazzo Chigi, in Rome, has come to an end.
Works opened by Luigi Bobba, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies, delegated to the third sector, youth policies and civil service. During the speech, he expressed appreciation for the initiative promoted by the DAP, shared on an international level by 22 foreign countries.
“The crucial element of this event – Bobba stressed – is certainly the Istanbul Convention. The Government of Italy received it last August, detecting measures and choices which translate not only into contrasting services, but also into means of prevention that aim at curbing this phenomenon. This is a suitable and necessary choice for protecting women and children, a choice that turns into a culture”.
The Secretary reiterated the collaboration between the Department of Youth and National Civil Service and the Department for Anti-drug policies, with the stipulation of a memorandum of understanding last March. The latter became the base of a call in the areas of prevention and contrast of drug use among young generations. Among other participants, there were also associations of the third sector.
The Coordinator of the DPA, Patrizia De Rose, at the end of the seminar stated that: “As stakeholders we have the obligation to implement all the possible measures to prevent these episodes of both physical and psychological violence from happening. It is essential to give our contribution and provide our know-how in countries where the absent State leaves room for new drug routes, arm and human trafficking, problems that represent a critical point and a situation of absolute emergency for both Italy and Europe as a whole. Protection of human rights, protection from violence related to drug use among women and children, the most vulnerable groups, are questions we are going to propose for a side-event that will be organized during the UN General Assembly on Drugs (UNGASS 2016). We are going to invite the Pompidou Group to partake in it”.
