Tension has soared between Moscow and Ankara. This morning two F16 of the Turkish air-force shot down a Russian warplane on the border with Syria. One of the two pilots has died; in a video released by the Syrian rebels one can see the body of the man with a swollen face. The other, however, seems to be still be alive. The order to attack the jet has come directly from the prime minister Davotoglu after the aircraft had violated the Turkish airspace and had been warned 10 times before being struck. This last version does not convince the Kremlin. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the plane was 6 thousand meters above the ground.
“Today on the Syrian territory, seemingly as a result of a land attack, crashed a SU-24 which was part of the Russian contingent in the Syrian republic” Moscow explained. “The plane was at an altitude of 6,000 meters. We are trying to understand what happened to the pilots. According to preliminary data, the pilots have catapulted themselves out of the aircraft. The circumstances of the crash of the Russian aircraft still need to be clarified. The Ministry of Defense said that, during the whole flight, the plane was always over the Syrian territory. And this is documented by objective control sources”.
Meanwhile, according to the office of the Turkish prime minister, Davutoglu has discussed the incident with the Chief of Staff, Hulusi Akar and with the Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu. The office of the prime minister said also that Turkey will consult NATO and UN about the events on the border with Syria.
