A new Intifada “to liberate Jerusalem”. Hamas started action at the end of a week of clashes in the territories that reached Eastern districts of the Holy City and the Esplanade of the Mosque, exhorting the affiliates, sympathizers, and young Palestinians to unite against Israel. During a sermon of the weekly prayer on Friday, in a mosque of the Gaza City, the leader of the movement of Islamic resistance Haniyeh has said that the revolt is “the only path that will lead to the liberation of the territories occupied by Tel Aviv. “Gaza will have its role in the Intifada against Jerusalem – he said – and it is ready for the clash”.
The escalation of violence spread to the strip where on Friday the Israeli armed forces shot and killed five Palestinians and wounded 25 during a counter-action against hundreds of rioters, stationed along the barrier of separation with the Jewish State, who were throwing stones.
A spokesman of the army stated that approximately 300 Palestinians have gathered in the past few days to demonstrate along the fence. They throw stones and launch burning tires at the Israeli soldiers. “The forces on the spot have reacted by opening fire on the main instigators of the uprising was to avoid further escalation and disperse the uprising”, he explained.
With periods of maximum national effort and pauses of reorganization, the Palestinian uprising has been challenging the stability of Israeli society for almost 30 years. The activists of the late 80’s who faced the Israeli army with stones and slingshots; at the beginning of the Year Two Thousand passed the baton to a new generation of armed struggle professionals. The first intifada begins on December 9,1987, and ends in 1993, with the Israele-Olp recognition agreements.
The first intifada lasted for almost six years and terminated with the Israele-Olp recognition agreements (1993). During the revolt in Gaza and the West Bank, is born a new nationalist leadership, while the influence of Jordan and Egypt diminishes. The final accounts are heavy: over a thousand deaths among Palestinians, and hundreds among Israelis. The interlude of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process (1993-2000) was interrupted in 2000 after the failure of the Camp David summit between Bill Clinton, Ehud Barak, and Yasser Arafat. On September 29, 2000, there had been a new revolt, after which the leader of the Likud Ariel Sharon made a visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Appeared and began to be used human bombs. In Israel follow years of social and political turmoil: at its worst, in 2002, died 452 people. Too many, according to the government of Israel, that orders the creation of a defensive barrier along the borders and sends the army to suppress the revolt. At the end, in the West Bank were caused about 500 victims.
The successor of Arafat and Abu Mazen, claims immediately to be contrary to armed revolt: he shares its political purposes (the end of the Israeli occupation), yet he believes that the price paid is excessive. In 2005 Sharon himself surrendered and ordered the withdrawal of eight thousand settlers from the Gaza Strip. And the following year, when the Palestinians go to the polls, they reward Hamas, which later assumes control over Gaza with a military anti-pna putsch. During the last year new watchwords have taken root in Hamas’ strategy. Last year there was the “Car intifada” (the use of automobiles to trample Israelis), now “intifada knives” are back. According to the Sheikh Ahmed Yassin (the founder of the Islamic movement) in 1987, the revolt put an end to a historical cycle of inferiority and humiliation of his people which had lasted for 40 years (from 1948, that is, after the birth of Israel) and started an opposite cycle of other 40 years. According to his forecasts, the latter should lead to the final defeat of the enemies over a dozen years.
