The number of landings and asylum seekers in Europe since the beginning of 2015 has reached 250 thousand and already exceeds the total number of arrivals in 2014. This is what affirms IOM (International Organization migration), pointing out that the total of the victims of immigration marks a dramatic record. “At least 2,300 ” people died while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

From the beginning of 2015, about 102 thousand migrants have crossed the Sicilian Waterway, “the most deadly route in the world” for those who are fleeing from violence, disasters, and poverty, and have come from Libya to Italy, sustains IOM’s note. According to the latest data from the Athenian government, a total of 134,988 migrants and asylum seekers have arrived in Greece from Turkey . If we sum up arrivals in Spain (2,166) and Malta (94), the total number of arrivals in 2015 is 239,248, and the Organization calculates that the threshold of 250,000 will be reached by the end of August, compared to 219 thousand registered during the entire 2014. The major countries of origin of the migrants and asylum seekers are Syria, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Somalia, clarifies IOM.
