Front National is the first political party of France. Regional elections, the last ones before presidential elections which will be held in 2017, certify the unprecedented success of the far-right force led by Marine Le Pen. FN obtained 30% of votes, followed by Nicolas Sarkozy’s Républicains (25%) and the socialists (President Francois Holland’s front which stopped at 23%). The result allows the eurosceptic party to confirm its position in 6 regions and the two Le Pen (Marine and the niece, Marion Marechal) to triumph with 41% in the districts were they have stood for the election: respectively Nord Pas-de-Calais Picardie and Provence-Alpes -Cote d’Azur.
“France lifts its head again”, is the first commentary the leader of the French right made. Greeting her supporters in the headquarters located in He’nin Beaumont, Marine has launched an appeal to all the voters who “feel patriots before anything else” to vote for the Front National in the second round on Sunday 13, “the only truly republican formation because it is the only one that defends the nation and its sovereignty”.
“The verdict of the French is clear – Sarkozy has admitted – we need to understand the profound exasperation of all French people, of all those who barely make ends meet or undertake an initiative and are unable to keep it going. Their identity is disregarded and their lifestyle is being changed: not to listen to their exasperation would be irresponsible”. Then, the former president of the Republic has proposed “to refuse any merger or affiliation of lists. What the French deserve is clear rotation in all regions. This is the republican attitude”.
The Socialist Party, which has gained 1% in this election, has announced that it will withdraw from the second round in the regions where left lists have no victory chances. This is what the secretary of the party, Jean Christophe Cambadelis, said. The executive was referring especially to Nord-Pas de Calais-Picardie and Provence-Alpes -Cote d’Azur regions. Undoubtedly, on the victory of Front National weighs the emotional impact of Paris attacks. Fear won more than anything else. From the immigration emergency to terrorism, Le Pen has always appeared as a woman ready to make the national interest prevail. A strategy that has worked very smoothly.
