“Terrorism is the real problem. It directly supported by Turkey. It is directly supported by the royal family of Saudi Arabia and by a number of Western States, especially France and the United Kingdom”. That is the accusation Bashar al-Assad’s expressed during an interview for Sputnik, a daily close to the Kremlin.
The Libyan leader mentioned also a transition phase in Syria. According to him, it has to take place “under the current constitution” and needs to provide for “a government of national unity” that will include “different political forces.” The members of this executive will have to be from “the opposition, the independent, as well as from the present and other governments”. Its primary goal should be to “work at the new constitution and make the Syrian people vote it”. Transition to the new constitution can “take place” only after that.
Assad also said he is certain that many “countries that were against Syria, I mean first of all Western countries, will try to make their companies partake in this process. Whereas in Syria we have absolutely no doubts that we will ask the help of our friendly States, mainly Russia’s. I think – he concluded – that Russian companies will have plenty of room to contribute to the reconstruction of Syria”.
