War scenarios in Italy. A thousand soldiers and 40 helicopters from 7 European countries engaged in a military training to prepare for the challenges that come from asymmetric warfare. The “theater” is the Tuscia.
Global terrorist threats and new winds of war blowing from the East cannot let us be unprepared. A world war is underway albeit with different scenarios from those of the twentieth century: a puzzle of conflicts that light up every continent with thousands of civilian casualties.
“Italian Blade 2015” was a military training that saw a deployment of forces formed by private helicopters from many European countries that have decided to participate in the project of the European Defense Agency: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia. Italy, as well as helping with the largest contingent, with crews from the Army Aviation and Navy, also had to lead the training with the General Arrigo Arrighi (currently Commander of the Army Aviation Brigade). The training aimed to increase the level of interoperability among the various armed forces to act promptly and effectively wherever it is required and in operational theaters, where daily the various nations have to collaborate to achieve the common objectives. At the forefront, our raiders 9th Reg. Col. Moschini and crews from the Army Aviation.
Between Monteromano and Viterbo a war simulation occurred, following a well known script: the contrast to irregular groups, insurgents and militia. During the week, in Monteromano’s polygon, German parachutists faced the attack on a convoy and only the arrival of the Hungarian attack helicopters Mi-24 and the Italian Mangusta managed to prevent annihilation. Nothing was left to chance. Even the wounded had a realistic appearance, thanks to the make-up made by the Italian Red Cross volunteers.
There are several threats nowadays and also important things are targeted. Especially in these new scenarios of asymmetric conflict, it becomes important to capture the leader of the enemy. So the aim is to capture the general Cirius, a prominent member of the insurgent. The den-command of the enemy is identified by the men of Rao: it was far away from the operating bases and so a forward base was prepared where to flow the transport helicopters Ch 47, Cougar and the Mangusta to be able to refuel them to operate safely. The landing area was made safe by German paratroopers that landed on the area.
But at this point the “bad guys” launched the alarm and merged the reinforcements. Too late. The raiders Col Moschini descended with ropes by the powerful Ch 47 and assaulted the hideout destroying the threat and taking away the “target”. The whole operation was controlled by Shadow, the new elidrone of Augusta Westaland, which is the result of Italian research and technology.
“The European Defense is a reality and these trainings are intended to unify and make the teams from different nations collaborate with each other, to create greater efficiency – the Undersecretary Domenico Rossi said – The threats are global and the response cannot be entrusted to just one country. Funds are always a problem. We are trying to balance the budget compared to the tasks that the armed forces have to face. The Army is in the forefront to ensure security at home with the operation Safe Streets and in the various theaters of operations abroad. Libya is a European problem and any kind of commitment must go in the direction of the common good”.
