We must reclaim our roles of inhabitants of the city, build relationships, sports, cultural activities, where integration and inclusion can flourish and grow. At present, fundamentalism and terrorism are fed also by social discomfort, which creates fragile people who experience mental suffering and can be pushed towards ferocious actions.
All the moderate, of every social class and religion, must create actual shared pathways of participation to build the common good, encourage the growth of the multiculturalism existent in our times. Respect, tolerance, and solidarity need to increase at school.
Violent people need to be isolated and educated, the dangerous need to undergo treatment and to be placed in protected environments where they can feel guided and loved. But above all, we have to show zero tolerance to arms sales, both to individuals and to the States that forage terrorists.
Twenty years ago, seven men of God, the monks of Tibhirine, were in Algeria killed. There is a letter-testament left by Brother Cristian to his brother who would have killed him: “Giving Life will allow those who believe in the one God to contemplate his children of Islam together with Him, the way He sees them, to rejoice thanks to the Spirit, whose secret joy will always be to establish communion and restore likeness, playing with differences.”
Words signed with blood. Seven of the nine monks, aged between 45 and 66, were seized by a commando, then killed, beheaded. Those monks became part of the Church, of the destiny of a people in which they wanted to disappear. Christian martyrs are ready to die for love.
