Four doctors under house arrest and six more employees suspended from the profession for 12 months. The financial police applied these precautionary measures to the employees of the Italian Bianchi-Melacrino-Morelli hospital during the investigation called “Mala Sanitas”. The latter opened about two years ago, with the accusations of ideological and material falsehood, as well as unauthorized interruption of pregnancy. House arrest and the other measures concern the medical staff of the departments of obstetrics and gynecology, neonatology, and anesthesia.
The investigations conducted by the Revenue Guard Corps have allowed to ascertain the existence of an illicit system inside the hospital, which has been put in place on the occasion of medical errors during operations on individual pregnant women or patients, so as to avoid facing the consequent responsibilities.
Among the ascertained incidents of medical malpractice there are the death – in two different cases – of two infants; irreversible injury to a child who was later declared 100% disabled; abortion procured to a woman without her consent; traumas, epileptic and myoclonic seizures suffered by a woman in labor, and structural and endemic lacerations of the private parts of other patients.
The blitz of the Tax Police Unit in the hospital happened this morning, following the order signed by the investigating judge Antonio Laganà, upon the request of the prosecutors Roberto Palma and Annamaria Frustaci. The investigationfile contains also several phone calls that were intercepted as part of an investigation conducted by the DDA – the Anti-Mafia District Directorate – on some individuals connected to the De Stefano clan. As it was pointed out by the investigators, the investigation revealed “the existence of a number of cases of serious professional negligence and absolute coldness and indifference towards the gift of life, which should be always rejected by the noble and primary medical function called to save the others, not themselves.”
