One person has died and there are 3 people have been reported injured following the explosion of a gas-leak which occurred around 6.30pm in Via Milano, in the centre of Barletta. In the evening, inhabitants in neighboring buildings were ordered to evacuate their homes. The victim is Nicholas Delvecchio, a 56-year-old man, Italgas worker. Among the casualties, the municipal police commander, Savino Filanino, who was on the spot with the councillor of the municipal police and fire brigade, alongwith engineers of Italgas, who were warned about the strong smell of gas. A firefighter and a worker have also been wounded in the explosion, and have been admitted to the Hospital of Barletta, where the latter is said to be in serious conditions.
The team had reached the area after several local residents had reported a strong smell of gas. Technicians quickly detected the gas-leak which came from front of the entrance of a hair salon for men. A little later, they started digging just beneath the pedestrian pavement in front of the salon’s entrance. At that point, the councillor Lanotte had gone away 200 metres to where his car was parked to fetch his phone charger when he heard a loud explosion. He returned to the place to find that the explosion had occurred right where the technicians of Italgas were working.
