Trump‘s victory questioned an entire system of power. The Republican right has not only won with his election but also a new idea in the world. In the face of serious occupational emergencies, to the dramatic economic and social inequality and insecurity related to immigration often handled inappropriately, our democratic systems are extremely fragile and the elites in power are unable to react to fear.
Trump’s statement coincides with a degradation and cultural impoverishment of our society and, at the same time, with the strong criticism towards the elites and establishment in charge. What announced the new President of the United States worries although the first signs appear to show the discontinuity with the tone used in the election campaign. His messages, until the day of the elections, were bitter and looking for an enemy, identified from time to time in the immigrants, in the free trade, globalization, the questioning of acquired rights, in the re-establishment of relations with Moscow in regardless of the relationship with the European Union and the Atlantic Alliance framework. Since the night of the election, however, certain tones were beveled, also during the meeting with President Obama prevailed a good dose of caution.
We’ll see it, but certainly with Trump opens a new phase. As stated by the President of the European Commission, Juncker, United States and the EU are linked to the same values and the same interests. It would be useless to wait with our arms folded. And we should not get to decisions imposed by events. Europe should take just a few steps. We should not say from the United States how necessary is today to work on a common European defense, foreign policy, immigration. But to have the European policies we need to transfer powers to Europe, to be convinced that the Union is the best insurance about the life of our countries.
In mid-stream you can no longer stand. Especially now, waiting for you to define the policy of the new administration. We have to be hopeful but also very careful. And there is no doubt that the Trump era call Europe to strengthen, integrate, to adopt governance able to face the challenges. The populist wind and anti-politics, moreover, are blowing too hard and they can overwhelm the democratic systems. That’s why we need more Europe, before it’s too late.
