Approaching the extradition to the US of Joaquín Guzmán, known as “El Chapo”,the world’s most powerful drug dealer, arrested on 8 January.
Today Mexico City court rejected five appeals of the defense, and now the powerful and bloodthirsty super boss of the Sinaloa cartel, twice escaped from Mexican prisons, he has only one chance on appeal to avoid being prosecuted in Texas and California, the two US states that have requested his transfer. Guzman has only one appeal available to the Collegiate Court of Criminal Protection, which it will probably be presented in the coming hours. The request of the US justice system has already been approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Supreme Court and it was strengthened today by the approval of the federal magistrate. The National Commissioner for Security, Renato Sales, in a television interview said:”It is still unsure if “El Chapo” could be extradited as early as next January or February”.
Refugio Rodriguez, head of the team of ten lawyers representing “El Chapo”,had defined Sales declarations “personal opinion”, emphasizing he had been instructed to “resist until the last possible moment” to any request for extradition to the USA, where his client is accused of murder, drug trafficking and laundering of funds.El Chapo” was captured last January, after his spectacular escape from the prison of El Altiplano, in the outskirts of Mexico City, through a 1.5 kilometer-long tunnel which started from the shower of his cell. He had already escaped once more, in 2001, hidden in a laundry prison cart in Puente Grande (Jalisco).
Behind the bars
The former leader of the Sinaloa cartel is now in Ciudad Juarez prison, on the same frontier with El Paso (Texas), where he constantly complains of the conditions he is held, denouncing he lives in “inhuman” isolation. Only yesterday, his lawyers released a report prepared by doctors who examined “El Chapo”. He said:”I remember old things but not the most recent ones, sometimes i don’t remember what I ate yesterday. The Mexican authorities have rejected the complaints of “El Chapo” indicating that in 164 days he spent in Ciudad Juarez, he has received 33 visits by his lawyers, 35 visits of relatives, 10 personal visits, 75 visits generalist doctors and 4 medical visits specialists.
