Terror makes an attempt to continue its fil rouge in Paris, but this time it does not seem to have taken the Intelligence by surprise. A car containing at least six gas cylinders was found during the night between Saturday and Sunday near the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The details provided by Counterterrorism, stating that the vehicle, a Peugeot 607, had no license plate. The tanks were not connected to a detonator. Probably the preparation of the bomb was still in its initial stage, the car was still “harmless”. But once triggered, it would have been devastating.
Investigations continue at a fast pace, and 5 or 6 arrests have been carried out in the last few hours. Not even the slightest suspicion is ignored: it is not surprising, considering that France’s wounds are still open after the attack at the Bataclan and the massacre in Nice. According to Le Figaro, security sources define the present terror alert as enigmatic and disturbing, and they take it very seriously. Already on 24 May, during a hearing before the National Assembly Patrick Calvar, general manager of the inner security (DGSI) said he was “convinced” that Isis “was going to move to the phase of car bombs and explosive ordnances.”
Earlier, in January 2015, the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris suffered an attack; another attack struck the kosher supermarket Hyper Cacher in Porte de Vincennes. After these attacks, the anti-terrorism device in France underwent a substantial reorganization, but the results have turned out to be different from those expected.
State of Emergency
This discovery may be a sign that something has really changed, that Paris is now able to defend itself. We have to keep in mind also that the French National Assembly has recently voted the extension of the state of emergency until 2017, despite the fact that President François Hollande said in an interview that it would not have been extended. That is the fourth time that the French Parliament votes in this sense. According to reports, six people were arrested. There seems to be at least one on the list of jihadist fundamentalists, at terrorist risk.
Tension has remained always high. During the summer, the government has tried to increase controls as much as possible. Hollande called on three thousand additional reservists to bring their total number to 15 thousand. “The prefects – explained the president of the Republic – will be able to use this resource to ensure safety during the various summer events in every department.”
