“Vote for me. What do you have to lose?” With these words, the Republican candidate for US presidency, Donald Trump, addressed African Americans during a rally in Dimondale, Michigan, which was entirely focused on the economy and on the effects of the crisis in cities like Detroit. “What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump?”, said the candidate after emphasizing that many people who belong to the African-American community are living in poverty and have no jobs.
Trump did not miss the occasion to attack his rival, Hillary Clinton, who traditionally enjoys high support among black people, stating that “no group has suffered more damage from Hillary Clinton’s policies than African Americans” and foreseeing that, if elected president, by the end of the first term, “95% of the African American vote” will be on his side.
The Democratic candidate for president in the US immediately reacted on Twitter to the appeal of her Republican opponent to African Americans, inviting them not to vote for him: “This is so ignorant it’s staggering.”
