At least 11 newborns died and 7 more children were injured. This is the terrible outcome of a serious incident that had occurred in the Yarmouk hospital in Baghdad, Iraq. Tonight, an electrical fault sparked a huge fire in the maternity ward. At least 11 infants died, whereas 7 more children and 29 women were rescued from the flames and transferred to another hospital. Some of them are in a serious condition.
The news about the incident and the number of victims have been spread by the spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Ahmed al-Rdainy, in an official message. He has explained that all the newborns who died were premature. CNN reports that all the little victims died from asphyxia and suffocation, a terrible death due to the smoke and heat generated by the flames.
Minister al-Saita Rdainy has also informed that it is still unclear what had sparked the fire, but that most likely the flames were caused by an electrical fault. The 29 women who had given birth last night in the above mentioned hospital – the spokesman said – were all transferred to other centers in the Iraqi capital.
