@franciscus, Pope Bergoglio’s Instagram account, has exceeded 3 million followers – announced the site of the Vatican Radio. The Pontiff had appeared on 19 March on the social network launched in 2010 and based mainly on sharing photos and videos. The first photo posted portrayed him on his knees, praying. Next to the inscription: “Pray for me”, a phrase translated also to other languages. “I am beginning a new path, in Instagram – he tweeted the same day – to travel together with you along the path of God’s mercy and tenderness”.
However, unlike what is happening on Twitter, where the Pope has an account in 9 different languages, on Instagram there is just one official account. His posts still go with short messages, all of which are translated into English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, and German. The Prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, Msgr. Dario Edoardo Viganò, on the occasion of the launch of the initiative, promised before our microphones that “the idea is simply to narrate a pontificate through images to enter the gestures of tenderness and mercy all those who want to accompany or who are eager to know the pontificate of Pope Francis”.
