“The credibility of the Church cannot be separated from the merciful and compassionate path of love that brings new life and gives courage to face the future with hope.” “The lintel that supports the life of the Church is mercy. All of its pastoral action must be wrapped in tenderness and nothing of its announcement and testimony to the world can be devoid of mercy.”
These are the words the Pope wrote in his message to Fra Francesco Bruno Cadoré, Master General of the Order of Preachers, also known as Dominican Fathers. Excerpts from the message, sent by Secretary of State Pietro Parolin on behalf of the Pope, are published by the Vatican Radio.
Pope Bergoglio invited to rediscover the urgency of solidarity and forgiveness and, remembering the figure of St. Dominic, “tireless apostle of grace and staunch defender of the truth”, he expresses his hope that his followers can testify mercy, “embodying it in their life” and becoming “a sign of God’s closeness and tenderness, so that even today’s society can rediscover the urgency of solidarity, love, and forgiveness.” The message has been sent on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers. Taking place in Bologna from 16 July to 5 August, the General Chapter of the Provincial Dominican priors takes place in the context of the special Jubilee of mercy and of the eighth centenary of the confirmation of the Order at the hand of Pope Honorius III.
