“No weapon regime will be applied throughout the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic for 72 hours, starting from 13 July 2016”, reads a statement released by the Syrian public media. The decision was taken by the government army command loyal to Bashar al-Assad.

The statement of the Syrian Armed Forces, points out that the truce will last until Friday midnight, days when the Islamic holy month of Ramadan will finish. But it is not yet clear whether the “calm” regime has been agreed with the forces that oppose the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian allies. On other occasions, the Assad government had announced a “ceasefire” but the truce was never respected: in June, the Russian center for reconciliation in the Syrian air base Hmeimin recorded five violations of the truce.

Yesterday, Pope Francis’ video message, released to promote a campaign of Caritas Internationalis, launched an appeal to all the governments involved in the search for a solution, stressing that war was not the only possible option and inviting to find a political answer to the problems of the country. Moreover, in the message, the Pope strongly condemned all those countries that on the one hand talk about peace, but on the other hand, provide weapons. Bergoglio also condemned the “incredible amounts of money that are spent on providing weapons to the fighters.”
