The Pope has established a Committee for the distribution of the funds raised in Europe for humanitarian support to Ukraine, through the collection he had launched on 24 April. In a news conference, Father Federico Lombardi has explained how the committee is going to work: It will be led by a president, Msgr. Jan Sobilo, auxiliary bishop of Kharikiv-Zaporizhia, and will include 4 other members, 3 of whom will be chosen by the president in situ and one will be indicated by Caritas and Cor Unum, which coordinate the collection. “The committee – Lombardi has said –was set up for a year, but if needed, we will continue.”

The collection has yielded “a considerable amount of money, not of tens or hundreds of thousands of euros – Father Lombardi has said -. On the other hand, and the rest do not establish a committee of 5 people to manage an irrelevant sum”. Organizers and beneficiaries, Lombardi has said, are chosen “without distinction of religion, faith, or ethnic belonging”. Besides, the spokesman has stressed, “the whole initiative wants to be above differences.”

As to the actual amount of money collected in the churches of Europe, Father Lombardi explained to the journalists, “no one knows it yet, because the collection is a somewhat complex process: it begins in the parishes, then reaches Bishops conferences and finally Rome. Since we are talking about money, we do not make hasty moves; at any rate, it is a considerable amount of money.”

The note that announces the establishment of the Committee is similar to the that humanitarian action the Pope promoted through the collection of 24 April. It is called “The Pope for Ukraine” and allocates funds, to which Bergoglio has made a personal contribution, is “exclusively for the benefit of the population affected by the war, without distinction of religion, faith, or ethnicity.”
