Salvatore Girone will return immediately to Italy. This is the decision taken by the “working section” of the Indian Supreme Court, which implement the order of The Hague International Court to allow the Marine the return to Italy for the duration of the arbitration proceedings. Italian Foreign Ministry and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi welcomed the news. “We confirm our friendship to India, its people, and its government. And we welcome Girone who will be joining us on June 2”, tweeted the Italian Prime Minister.
In line with the provisions of the Hague tribunal, Italy and India have cooperated in recent weeks to define the conditions and procedures of the Marine’s return to Italy and his permanence there for the time of the arbitration proceedings on the Enrica Lexie case. “The government – reads a statement by the Italian Foreign Ministry – is looking forward to welcome Salvatore Girone in his homeland and reaffirms its commitment to comply with the conditions and procedures decided by the Indian Supreme Court. Today’s decision is a major achievement that recognizes the efforts of the Italian Government’s recourse to international arbitration to assert the explanations of the two Italian Marine riflemen. Italy will approach with the same commitment also the next steps of the arbitral proceedings”.
