North Korea claims to have miniaturized the nuclear bomb and that the country is ready for a preventive nuclear attack against the United States at any time. “If the American imperialists violate our sovereignty and our right to exist with nuclear weapons, the DPRK will not hesitate to launch a preventive attack” said the young North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “The warheads have been standardized to the point of making it possible to mount them on ballistic missiles due to their miniaturization – Kim told the media with satisfaction -. It can be truly defined nuclear deterrence.”
The 33-year old dictator has launched his latest provocation after Washington-Seoul joint military exercises, during which 320 thousand soldiers were deployed on the northern border and after UN Security Council’s last week decision to introduce new sanctions in response to the January nuclear test and February missile launch. On that occasion Kim had assured a ruthless “reaction against the enemies.” During an unspecified meeting with nuclear industry experts, the leader has congratulated with them on bombs that are small enough to be mounted on a missile. Nevertheless, while acknowledging the technological progress they achieved, military experts do not think that Pyongyang has sharpened his standards to the point of producing miniaturized devices that can be mounted on a long or very long-range missile.
The White House has expressed its disapproval of North Korea’s the nuclear weapons on several occasions. Last January, US President Barack Obama, during a phone call with the his South Korean counterpart, Park Geun-Hye, and the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, had condemned the nuclear test conducted by Pyongyang. Together, they stressed that “these actions constitute yet another violation of his obligations and commitments established by international law, including those contained in the resolutions of the United Nations”. Obama had also assured US’ “unshakeable commitment” for the security of the two countries and stressed the need for “a strong and unified international response to North Korea’s reckless behavior.”
