A historic meeting between Pope Francis and Iranian President Hassan Rohani took place at the Vatican. Rohani began his European tour from Italy. During the meeting, the two leaders recalled “the conclusion and the implementation of the Nuclear Agreement, emphasizing the important role Iran is expected to play along with other countries in the region, in order to promote appropriate political solutions to issues afflicting the Middle East, opposing the spread of terrorism and arm trafficking,” reads the declaration of the Holy See.
They pointed out the “common spiritual values and mentioned the good relations between the Holy See and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the life of the Church in the country, and the action of the Holy See to promote the dignity of human person and religious freedom”, the statement continues. With regard to terrorism, “they recalled the importance of interreligious dialogue and of the responsibility religious communities have in promoting reconciliation, tolerance, and peace.” After the meeting, Rohani asked Bergoglio to pray for him and wished him all the best in his work.
