Today’s multiple attack in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, has killed 7 people. A group of gunmen – according to the media there were at least 14 of them – blew up at least six bombs in the city center. The victims are five alleged perpetrators and two civilians, an Indonesian and a Dutchman – the security minister Luhut Panjaitan has announced. The police have announced that the attack can be considered concluded and there are no terrorists in flight, contrary to the rumors which were circulating on the local media.
“Five terrorists are dead”, the minister has said. Police had previously communicated that among the alleged dead perpetrators there were two kamikazes who blew themselves up. The spokesman of the police, Muhammad Iqbal, has added that there are five policemen, a civilian of foreign nationality and four Indonesian civilians among the injured. Four alleged attackers were arrested.
The Indonesian President Widodo immediately condemned what had happened. “The State and people do not have to be afraid, we will not succumb in the face of such an awful attack. I ask the entire population to keep calm. The situation is under control,” – he said, paying his condolences to the victims’ families. “Our sincere condolences for the victims of this attack. We all certainly condemn today’s attacks, which sowed terror among people,” he added. The President has decided to suspend his brief visit to Cirebon, a city in the province of West Java, and has ordered the authorities to pursue and arrest the attackers. No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. But police had received threats from Isis time ago.
