Fear in Istanbul where the metro station of Bayrampasa suffered a strong explosion. One person was killed and several other people were injured. The cause of the explosion is still unknown. At first, they said it was the failure of a transformer. But as the hours passed, the hypothesis of an attack with the help of a rudimentary explosive device has taken shape. The mayor of Bayrampasa city district, Atilla Aydiner, gave credit to this version by having stated that the blast was caused by a “pipe bomb”,which consists in a tube filled with explosive and splinters of metal.
The governor Vasip Sahin uses more caution. According to him, every supposition is being taken into consideration, also that of a terrorist attack. But he has not mentioned it explicitly. Also the number of victims and that of the other people who got involved are a mystery. Many ambulances rushed on the site where the explosion triggered panic. The bomb burst on an overpass of the train, after a truck of the special security forces had crossed it. There are still doubts about the possibility of an attack of terrorist background: Lately, in addition to having been targeted by Islamic extremism, Turkey has been struck several times by militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) opposed by Erdogan. Meanwhile, after an initial stop, city trains resumed circulation.
