It was meant to be a warning about the effects of alcohol, an old-style lesson to dissuade the adolescent from drinking, and instead, lead him to death. This is the story of the sixteen-year-old Kendal Ball of Guillemots, Wyoming. The mother Paulette and the stepfather Joseph have forced him to a marathon of drinks with the specific intention of making him feel sick, so he would think twice before drinking again. The senseless education practice, however, led the adolescent to ethyl coma and then to death.
According to the account of the parents, Kendal had recently shown a strong interest in drinking and, out of fear that he could have become an alcoholic as his biological father, they decided to give him “a lesson” using a bottle of whisky which they forced him to drink for hours until he fainted. “When I went to check if he was fine – has declared the mother in tears – he looked at me and raised his thumb showing ‘ok'”. However, when, four hours later, the stepfather decided to check his conditions again, he found him cold.
The autopsy detected a blood alcohol level of 0,587% ,more than seven times above the limit granted to drivers. The couple is held momentarily in the county prison, and is accused of homicide, risking up to 20 years in prison. “We wanted to make him understand how bad one can feel after getting heavily drunk – they explained to the investigators – we never thought we could kill him”.
