The style and approximation of unmotivated insults is the rudest and most trivial way to relate to someone, especially if we do not know them. What “seems” or “appears” is often sufficient to sentence and judge with absolute intolerance, even when we are not sure of what we are saying. The sacred right to debate and reply cannot legitimate verbal violence which is always sterile.
In modern society the school of insults has already become more important than the formally recognized institution. Without scruples and restraint, aggressive tones and manners, son of “hearsay”, transformed into the ordinary way to defame other people. This type of behavior never ceases to amaze me, as happened in my last Editorial entitled “Bravo Galantino”. The article caused different reactions among which some of high and exaggerated tones and, in some cases, crazy. Some readers, self-described as “practicing Catholics”, protested heavily because their offensive and vulgar comments full of unfounded and general accusations were not published. No, this is not acceptable and there is a limit to everything.
The time of calm dialogue and listening seems to be over. The word of the day is conflict… Those who yell, who instigate hate, are almost considered to be the new saviors. Besides, screaming and talking with anger ignites spirits, and injects adrenaline provoking the same foolishness, in a kind of chain reaction, a vicious cycle apparently unstoppable. Media exalts this manner, fundamental to augment sharings. A talk show without screams and insults is destined to failure.
There is also a devious offense, less noisy but equally horrid, because made of silence and full of prejudices and disgust. Some people prefer not to yell their calumnies, but to oppose a snaky hiss full of arrogance and duplicity, able to insinuate any kind of vileness, making them breathe. It is sad to verify that, in this aggressive society, those who wish bad things, being delighted at somebody’s fall, enjoying the errors and weakness of other people, are likely to get to the top. They may even consider themselves religious, devoted, and practicing.
It is like the most popular destructive sport and unfortunately it is practiced by the mass; a swollen river, a multitude of new barbarians blinded by subjective pseudo-certainties ready to fire on anybody, also in the name of God.
The approximation, the “hearsay”, “people say”, relative 2+2, unmotivated lies, unfounded accuses, sullying, using media to destroy, venting one’s own dissatisfaction, are nothing more than subjects taught at the school of insults.
