There are 44 dead and 520 injured people due to the violent explosions, that shook the area of Binhai, close to the city of Tianjin, in the north-east of China. Among the victims there are 12 firemen and 66 people were hospitalized in serious condition. The industrial site became a huge ball of fire after the powerful explosions that started in a barn containing explosive material. The fire spread quickly all over the industrial zone, where numerous containers and department stores caught fire. Glasses and debris arrived miles away, while a cloud of black smoke covered the city.
The accident occurred around 23.30 local time, in Tianjin, a port city to the south-east of Beijing. The first two explosions happened 30 seconds one from another, triggered by a load of flammable chemical material that took fire in one of the barns in industrial zone. Other explosions followed whose waves of impact could be heard several kilometers away. Some witnesses reported that at the time when the explosion occurred, the earth shook as during an earthquake. Cars were damaged, as well as the buildings that had deep cracks and broken windows. Besides, several towers were left without electricity and some underground tracks were damaged. Specialized teams were sent on the spot, in case new explosions happened in the barns with chemical material.
