After a month of negotiations, Obama approves air strikes in defense of Syrian rebels trained by the Pentagon as part of an Anti-Isis strategy. The news, spread by the American media, has already provoked bewilderment. Obama’s decision runs the risk of creating a further split with Russia, an ally of the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. The risk is that while supporting the groups fighting against the Damascus government, American aircrafts could fight with the regime forces. “Moscow – eclares the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskvo – has stressed many times that helping the Syrian opposition would mean further destabilization for the country”
This is not the first time USA offers air aid to the rebels. A similar case happened last week, when a compound of New Syria Force has been attacked, probably by the Nusra Front. In that case, according to CNN, an American airplane came and “ repelled the attack with success”. “For us – explained the National Security Council spokesman, Alistair Baskey – the Syrian forces trained and equipped by the Department of Defense are partners in the struggle against Isis. We will provide all the necessary help to protect them”.
