Around the world by stages, that is the Volvo Ocean Race, on vessels sailing with crew, ended yesterday in Gothenburg, Sweden. Azzam, boat bearer of Abu Dhabi led by skipper Ian Walker, has triumphed.
Azzam in the last stage finished in fifth place, but it was enough to win the final: in second place in the overall standings, the Dutch Team Brunel, third in the French Chinese Dongfeng race team. But in the last stage the first boat to cut the finish line was the turkish-American, Alvimedica with the Italian Alberto Bolzan at the helm: the ‘man from Friuli, winning the ninth and final race from Lorient to Goteborg after 4 days 9 hours and 53 seconds of sailing with a light wind, is the first Italian with a successful stage since 1998, when Paolo Bassani aboard Merit Cup, skippered by New Zealander Grant Dalton, won the final stage, from La Rochelle to Southampton.
To assign the fourth place will be decisive Inmarsat In-Port Race Gothenburg, scheduled in June 27: contend for Mapfre and its Team Alvimedica, totaling 34 points. Sixth place for Vestas Wind Team, back in the race after the accident on November 29 and the only team that failed to win a stage; SCA seventh team led by British skipper Sam Davies, with the historic victory at Lorient, did back an all-female team on the biggest stage of ocean sailing.
