muro immigrati

A new wall will divide Europe. A division no longer between West and East, capitalism and communism, but between rich and desperate people. This shocking idea has been suggested by the Hungarian government, which has decided to close the border with Serbia by building a barrier 4 meters high and 175 kilometers long to stem the flow of illegal migrants, as if they were the White Walkers described in “A Game of Thrones”. The news was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto. “The government has instructed the Ministry of the Interior – he said – in order to close the border with Serbia and to build a four-meter high enclosure along the 175-kilometer-long border with Serbia”.

The preliminary operations for the building of the barrier should be completed by next Wednesday. “Of course, we will inform our Serbian colleagues in detail”, the minister added. Last week, the conservative Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that he would close the border to limit the access of migrants and of asylum seekers in the country. In 2014 Hungary welcomed more refugees per capita than any other EU country, excluding Sweden: more than 54 thousand compared with the 2,000 in 2012. According to the government, 95% of these arrived passing through the border with Serbia.

The decision to build a wall along the border with Serbia to prevent the passage of migrants “is not violating any international agreement”, according to the Hungarian Government. “Other countries have opted for the same solution”, the chief diplomat in Budapest said, talking about Bulgaria, Greece and Spain. According to Szijjarto, “among all the countries of the European Union, Hungary is the one that suffers the most strong migratory pressure”. “A common EU response to this challenge requires too much time and Hungary can no longer wait. We must act”, the minister said.
