Four children were found dead in their house in the district of Qixingguan: the eldest one was a 13-year-old boy, the youngest was a 5-year-old little girl. Their parents had left them home alone in March driven by the necessity to find a job in big cities. The boy left a note in which he wrote: “the right time has come”. The most likely hypothesis is that they committed suicide, even if what actually happened is still to be discovered. In fact, the children drank a pesticide and according to local media the sisters were strongly influenced by their older brother.
Two village leaders have been fired and three senior officials have been suspended while the police continue to investigate to find the truth. The district attorney has promised exemplary punishment. The case in fact strongly moved the people in China, where the phenomenon of children abandoned by their parents is widespread (it is estimated that there are millions of cases of this type). The same Chinese Premier Li Keqiang asked local governors to be more careful and vigilant to ensure that cases like this do not happen anymore.
