The 4th of July will be a day from hell, according to the plans of a group of neo-Nazi demonstrators, who have signalled their intention to hold a rally on that day in Golders Green, an area of north London where Jewish residents make up 40% of the population. But several Labour and antifascist groups have said they will organise counter-demonstrations, and this raises fears of possible violence to come.
The provocation of the small group New Dawn now meets the “Golders Green Together” campaign, launched by the London Jewish Forum and by the anti-fascist organization “Hope not Hate”. Moreover, an online petition has started – already signed by more than 1,100 people – also supported by Tessa Jowell, one of the mayoral candidates.
Jowell also asked the Interior Minister, Theresa May, to ban the march, but under British law the minister has no powers to ban a “static” demonstration, which is not expected to be uproarious. The campaign will also hold – until July 4 – a series of public meetings intended to enhance “the diversity and beauty” of the population of London. The entire district will then be decorated with green and golden ribbons, the colours of the name of the neighbourhood.
