Police conducted a new raid against ‘Mafia Capital’. It was the beginning of the new phase of the operation called “Middle World”, that led to the arrest of 44 people in Sicily, Abruzzo and Lazio. As well as those arrested, another 21 people are being investigated and at the moment are out on bail. All of them are accused of mafia conspiracy, bribery, corrupt practices, false invoicing, fraudulent transfer of assets and other crimes.
Local politicians were among those detained, as the former president of the City Council of Rome, Mirko Coratti, the former council member Daniele Ozzimo, the city councilmen Tredicine Giordano, Massimo Caprari, and the former president of the X municipality of Rome (Ostia) Andrea Tassone, forced to resign from the Democratic Party after being involved in suspicious relations with Buzzi. At the moment he is under house arrest – according to the investigators, he received €30 thousand after having helped Buzzi and Carminati managing the beaches of Ostia. The measures resulted from an investigation last year into corruption at city institutions – a case dubbed Mafia Capital, a far-right armed group led by Massimo Carminati, who was detained.
According to police, the investigation has confirmed “the existence of mafia organization operating in the Capital. There is a connection between crime, politics and local enterprises”. Furthermore, the investigation has uncovered a widespread system designed to allow a cartel of companies to win lucrative public contracts to manage migrant reception centres.
Among the 44 arrested, there is also Luca Gramazio, former member of Forza Italia, who resigned after being investigated last December. According to investigators, he participated to “Mafia association as a member of the political game that interacted with the entrepreneurial element and with the strictly criminal one, following a treble system.”
