Unfortunately, car crashes happen and everyone can cause them. Distraction, carelessness – let us think about mobile phones – or use and abuse of drugs. It happens because of Italian people and because of foreigner in our country. There are people surfing the events without going deep in the phenomenon, without analyzing it intellectual honesty. One example is the very serious car crash in Rome that caused 1 person to die and 8 to be badly wounded.
A while ago, people used to condemn an entire population because of the bad actions of some individuals (I am not just thinking about gypsies, but to Albanian, for example). This was a characteristic of Italian press, which did not spare the word ‘extra-communitarian’ in its titles to connect it to some crime. This bad habit has contaminated politics too; now that Italy is approaching elections, politicians use populism to increase their votes.
Nevertheless, this is a low politic. When it comes to this kind of events politicians should educate, prevent ad punish those who committed the crime. Punishing the crime of one individual does not mean blaming the whole population.
We believe integration is an essential value from a human and Christian point of view. We all are pilgrims on this earth; we have the right to move freely from one country to the other. It has to be everyone’s right, always respecting local laws and culture.
We believe we must work to make ethnic and religious groups communicate, to go beyond our national identity. Defending nationality with a vengeance has already been done. Today’s challenge is integration, meaning we have to live respecting the culture we want to be integrated in.
