A juridical obstacle for the Minister of Defense. Some are trying to clarify how 317 soldiers died and more than 3,600 are sick because exposed to depleted uranium without proper protection. Leaders knew about the risks since the Government decided to send soldiers in the areas where depleted uranium was. About 30 judgements are definitive.
“These verdicts – said Domenico Leggiero, Responsible for the Defense Department of the Military Observatory – may lead the way to very serious penalties because the risks of being exposed to areas where depleted uranium bullets are used were acknowledged, as getting sick or die for cancer”. This is more than a simple economic matter, this is a slap to all the victims’ dignity.
But what is depleted uranium? It is one of the fuel of nuclear stations, it generates loads of radioactive waste and they are very difficult to be stored and disposed of. In 1980 in the USA, some scientific researches announced it was necessary to stop producing it because radioactive waste exceeded the monthly limit of radioactive emissions. However, they continued using it.
Belgrade University led an analysis on in Serbia after the bombing of the Nato. Shortly, the studies determined the banks of the Danube, Velika Moldova and Lepenica as highly toxic. Moreover, in Serbia, special NBC troops used Uranium 238 during the war on April 18, 1999, near the borders of Bujanovac and on May 30, 1999, in Cape Arza. In addition, some episodes during the war in Iraq may be the beginning of new investigations about the effects of depleted uranium. But this is another story …
