All the airports in Belgium will be closed until 4pm because of – explained the authorities – a blackout that hit Belgocontrol. At 9.54 am the airport closed, vehicles near the airport were able to land – explained Dominique Dehaene, spokesperson of Belgocontrol. The “clear the sky” phase started immediately, it means that no vehicle is allowed if flying at 24,500 feet or less.
Hence, no aircraft will take off or land until 4pm. Many flights were late, some landed in nearby airport as Lille, and many were cancelled.
“There was a technical problem to the control system and no landing or take off is possible in Brussels. It is a national problem,” this was declared in a public note of the airport.
Anke Frasen of Brussel Airport confirmed it and added, “Some flights were sent to other airports and other are waiting for permission to land”
