Some people would do anything to scrape together a little more money. This is what happened in Rome, where a 59-year old man of Romanian origin, to make ends meet, thought to disguise himself as a priest and to beg for the “Orthodox Romanian Church”. The fake priest gave rosary beads and holy pictures to the ones who gave him some money, in order to make his masquerade look more convincing.
The man had been already arrested in April, 2014, while operating in the EUR area, always in disguise of a priest. The videos recorded by the Carabinieri of the Madonna del Riposo Station of Rome nailed him. They had followed his movements in the metro station “Ottaviano”, where he inclined the tourists towards his “just cause” asking them for an offering.
To the Carabinieri who caught him in act he even said that he had been designated by the “Patriarchy”, showing a membership card of the “Orthodox Church”. Membership card that, as all the other things, was fake. His fingerprints, moreover, made it possible to find out the true identity of the cheater, who is an habitué in this practice. He has been accused of fake declaration to a public official and of attempted fraud. The rosary beads and the holy pictures have been confiscated. I wonder which Saint he will turn to in order avoid the prison.
