Something new is happening between Israel and Hamas, there are rumours in the West Bank on negotiations underway that will bring to a ceasefire lasting from 5-10 years. The news is supposed to have angered Abu Mazen because any agreement between Tel Aviv and the military party that controls the Gaza Strip, would undermine the position of the Palestinian President.
An agreement that would benefit Hamas, whose popularity is in decline after the war of last summer, that had led some analysts to consider the party now in its last moments. Israel could obtain a long-term peace that would ensure Netanyahu the beginning of his term uphill and Tel Aviv would maintain its status quo that would save it to fight against an enemy whose strategy is not known.
The spokesmen of both the parties, however, deny everything, Sami Abu Zuhri of Hamas says that it is “news to deceive”, while Israeli Foreign Minister would rather not talk about it. To break the silence, however, is Abu Mazen: “I am aware of Hamas-Israel contacts and I consider them harmful to the Palestinian people”. This is what was reported by the newspaper Al-Dustur on occasion of the visit of the leader of the Palestinian Authority in Jordan. On the sidelines of these meetings, the most important question concerns what is happening within Hamas. What will really make the difference is who will have the upper hand in all this, will it be politicians like Ahmad Yousef, tied to the leader Khaled Mashaal in favour of secret negotiations, or military commanders loyal toMohammed Deif, Chief of the armed wing supported by Tehran and opposed to anytruce with the Israeli enemy.
