The Turkish police arrested Multu Kaya’s boyfriend. She was 19 and was shot in the head because she sang in a talent show with her arms unveiled. The newspaper Hurriyet announced it and explained that the attorney of Ergani arrested the boy, Veysli Ercan, although he declares he is innocent.
Ercan was taken into custody with three other people, and they were all questioned and released. The boy said to the police that he did not agree with her going to the talent show, but he stated that he did not shoot her. “Her family wanted her to go – he said – but I didn’t agree. We fought about it but I didn’t shoot her”. In addition he explained that he had succeeded in convincing Kaya to not participate in The Voice of Turkey (O Ses Turkiye), but she then chose to attend another talent “Sesi Cok Guzel” (His/Her Voice is so Beautiful). For this reason, Kaya denounced Ercan four months ago for threatens and menaces.
“I love her, how could I have shot her?” said the young boy, who was in the scene of crime at 3 am, when the girl was shot on May 18. The situation of Ercan is very serious because he was also out of range during the hours following the crime. He said he turn his mobile off and hid because he wanted to avoid facing her family.
At first, Turkish media had pointed its finger at her parents. Nevertheless, her father, Mehmet Kaya, denied this hypothesis saying he was proud of her daughter and supported her in her artistic dreams. Violence and femicides are a plague in Turkey. According to Stop Women Homicides, in 2014, 294 Turkish women were killed, 47% of them were killed because they wanted to take their own decisions. In 2015, the number of women killed is 91 already.
