An afternoon of terror in Secondigliano, populous neighborhood north of Naples. A man shot his family and then barricaded himself at home and started to shoot out at people from his window with a shotgun. The reports speak of 4 victims and 5 wounded (including his wife, a police officer and a policeman). The man who had barricaded himself then surrendered. Among the victims his brother and sister-in-law , a policeman and a passerby.
The aggressor, 48 year old Julius Murolo, was then stopped and taken away after a blitz carried out by the police. The apartment was raided by police and carabinieri and no gunshots were fired.
The victims are the sister-in-law of Julius Murolo, his brother, a passerby on the scooter and a police captain, Francesco Bruner, who was struck while rescuing an injured colleague. The wounded include two policemen, a Municipal officer, a policeman (slightly wounded on his hand, ) and a civilian, who have all been admitted to hospital. Yet to reconstruct the dynamics. The origin of the shooting appears to have been out of a futile cause i.e. a an argument washing-line, grafted on old disagreements on old family issues between Murolo and hs brother. During the argument, his brother attempted in vain to stop him, however in response Murolo shot him.
The inauguration ceremony in Naples metro station, planned for Saturday with Premier Matteo Renzi, was called off. This was announced by the Mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, who proclaimed national mourning until the day of the funerals of the victims. “We are shocked, it’s a huge tragedy-said the Mayor-. This tragedy directly affects the town and the municipality. I express my sympathy and maximum solidarity to the victims and to those who work every day on the streets and have today intervened to save lives “.
Murolo fired first with a gun, then with a shotgun, about an hour and a half later, according to a witness. The inhabitants of the area explained that they thought initially they were filming a drama, because the previous Thursday, a few dozen metres away from the site of the shooting, an episode of Gomorrah ” had been filmed. Later, though, when the victims really fell to the ground, everything was clear to them.
