The Palestinian leader Abu mazen, arrived in Rome Thursday evening, 14th May. A busy agenda lasting  three days, rich in appointments with the Italian authorities. But it is this morning at 10:30 at the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, where the long awaited and much talked about meeting with the Holy Father was held. A hearing that would seal the recognition of Palestine on 13th May and would be communicated at the end of the plenary meeting on the bilateral Commission between the Holy Seat and the PLO.

An epochal event that sparked off an immediate reaction from Israel, said to be “deeply disappointed” at the decision of Pope Francis. “This move-as  is written in a note from the Secretariat of State to Tel Aviv-not advancing the peace process and does not contribute in bringing the Palestinian leaders around the table of bilateral negotiations Israel will examine the agreement and consequently will weigh their actions “.

Among the countries that have recognised the State of Palestine over the past year, Sweden with Stefan Lofven, leader of the new centre-left government, a step that has inspired Great Britain Spain, France and Ireland. Similarly  Italy, which with some indecision said it was ready to promote the recognition, and has discussed the case yesterday in the meeting with Abu Mazen, Presidet Mattarella and premier Renzi.

That of Bergoglio was a decisive action that has once again has speeded up relations among States and will change the world’s geo-political axis, as well as the brokering of the thaw between Cuba and the United States. Francis, whose pontificate has created a real media case on the papal figure appears to be carrying on a peace mission that begins to closely resemble that of the Saint of Assisi whose name he has chosen for himself. Further to the most strictly clerical revolutions, like the one to bringing Christians closer to a spiritual life that is essential and definite, the Holy Father is putting into practice the three words”permission”, “sorry” and “thank you” in a much wider context that goes beyond that of the Church.

After having recalled the opening mass of the Caritas International Assembly,  that the powerful will be called to judgment, Pope Francis is silently and with persevering faith working to touch the hearts of those who are leading the nations. He gave an amoralistic reproach to the Heads of State, taking on the responsability by deeply relating to them.  St. Francis called on His brothers to announce the Gospel not just with words, but with deeds, with their testimony of life, urging them on. It’s His attitude to fascinate people, from housewife to the priest to the political authorities, like Raul Castro Ruz that last Sunday, has opened up to the possibility of returning to church after the apostolic journey to Cuba.

A Pope who was able to break the mold of formalism presenting the world with a disarming “good evening”, a pastor that “smells his sheep” and this is demonstrated by the constant desire to be close to His faithful but especially to the poorest, a head of State, who is  present and active,  who made dialogue the most  powerful and effective weapon. A true peacemaker who has managed to build bridges between distant authorities and proof of this is in addition to the opening of dialogue between America and Cuba, the presence of the Israeli Ambassador to be held Sunday in St. Peter’s square for the canonisation of the first two Palestinian saints.
