French police has ended up in a whirlwind of controversy due to a shocking video showing some agents beating a group of migrants in Calais (the city on the Channel), officers wanted to stop refugees trying to reach Britain. Calais Migrant Solidariety uploaded the video and some images that quickly became viral on the internet, in the footage it is possible to see the police beating and kicking some refugees who had hidden in a truck heading to England. Police agents used tear gas to stop some migrants, while others had been forced to stay on their knees.
After the spread of the video, the Procurator of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Jean-Pierre Valensi, issued a press release explaining that he called the supervisory committee of the police for a meeting as the footage revealed “criminal actions that can be severely condemned if proven true”. The police also announced that it had opened an enquiry in order to “rapidly examine the circumstances of the intervention” and has ensured that any “eventual violation of ethical rules will be punished.”
