Matthew Kohr, a police agent of Raleigh (North Carolina), was offered byStarbucks a cup of coffee for free. Accidentally, it toppled over an burned him. The man decided to sue the company for 50,000 dollars. His lawyers argued that he should be compensated for the burns and blisters that the hot drink had caused and also for moral damage caused by the incident in 2012.
The man from the police force claimed that the cup-cover over the takeawayCup had exploded, causing the hot drink to spill over his body. This incident allegedly caused great stress, which causes the Crohn’s disease that forced him to undergo surgery to remove part of the intestine.
At first he had decided to sue only two of the employees who had served him that morning, but then he thought about it and decided to sue all the Starbucks. The multinational company has preferred not to pronounce itself on the matter, however, a spokesman said that the company serves at least 4 billion cups of coffee a year in paper cups. Only 59 of those were overturned.
