TECHNOLOGY, A SMARTPLATE WILL THINK OF WEIGHING OUR CALORIES SmartPlate is a project of the American company ‘Fitly’ able to detect the nutritional properties of food

In addition to the – often hated – weighing-scales, soon we will have another arch enemy: the “smart plate”. It will be this-simpatico? -high-tech tool, that will tell us if we are indulging too much as compared to our daily needs. The SmartPlate, designed by the American start-up ‘Fitly’ , is launching the project on ‘Kickstarter’ to raise funds-it has been equipped with three integrated cameras and visual detectors. Through its “eyes”, it is able to identify what you put in, i twill weigh it and through an app, i twill comunicate the nutritional properties at the same time giving the excessive calories.

The aim of the device – not dishwasher-proof,  is to enable  those who use it, to keep their food portions under control as well as the  characteristics of the foods. The innovation compared to the many applications already available for smartphones, consists in the fact that with SmartPlate, the user won’t need to enter data related to food since the pot itself will collect and display this information automatically. It cannot be used in a microwave, but has a special accessory for those who prefer this mode of cooking or heating food. In order to be finalised and be ready for its launch in 2016, the project aims in collecting 100,000 Dollars on ‘crowdfunding platform Kickstarter’, where it has already exceeded $ 17 thousand.

In future, it could be combined with other similar gadgets  like the HAPIfork, presented a few years ago at CES in Las Vegas, which is able to trace back what one eats. Launched with great pomp, it is now being implemented in the medical field in some hospitals to monitor patients’ nutrition. What remains to be seen is whether this ‘ SmartPlate’  rather than help us lose weight, will help us choke on the many hyper-caloric and exquisite specialities of our Italian cuisine!
