UK would probably be forced to internet rationing. The alarm was launched by some experts who saw that network traffic consumes more and more electricity, in 20 years it could consume the majority of the energy produced by the country. This increase in consumption is due to portable devices as smartphones, tablets and watches. Sometimes they consume up to 10% of the energy produced in UK. If this trend continues, the consumption could be unbearable by 2035.
Andrew Ellis proposed the rationing; he is professor of communication at Birmingham University and conducted researches at his university; he foresaw that internet could collapse within 15 days because of heavy data, particularly of videos. Problems may occur by 2022, and by 2030, it could be unbearable.
According to Cisco and Ericsson, network traffic will increase 10 times in 5 years, half the traffic is due to videos of smartphones and tablets. In addition, there is the streaming of Netflix, which corresponds to 35% of traffic in the USA and 25% in Australia.
The main problem is optical fiber. Internet connections became 50 times faster in 10 years, but according to Ellis, optical fiber will not bear this rhythm. There could be two solutions: increasing costs for users or rationing internet.
