It is called BioSure HIV Self-Test and it is considered the most accurate self-testing product ever created and sold in the UK and is the only product approved. A drop of blood is enough and the results are ready in 15 minutes, with 99.7% accuracy rate three months after the infection.
The DIY test is sold hoping to reduce the number of cases. According to some statistics, about 26,000 people have HIV in the UK and are unaware of it; therefore, they may inadvertently infect other people.
“We know that people who have HIV and start treatments early can avoid complications and can live a long and healthy life. Unfortunately, 24% of HIV positive people in the UK are unaware of it. Hence, we have to promote this self-test” – declared Rosemary Gillespie, Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust, responsible for the self-test campaign. The main difference between this and other tests is that you can use this one at home, many people prefer to receive the news outside the hospital”.
“I believe a great number of people is ignorant and think that this is just a homosexual thing, therefore, it does not affect them – explains Paul Flemings, of the Volunteer Association Positive East – other think that everything is ok because they took the test a couple years ago. Too many people stigmatize this disease; I do not think there is any other virus in history that is so stigmatized”.
