Giovanni Lo Porto “was volunteering, he was generous and expert about the world of cooperation for development”. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, recalled the Italian volunteer who disappeared in 2012, he was killed in January during an air raid in Afghanistan by the USA. The responsible of the Farnesina expressed his “personal closeness to Giovanni’s mother and all his relatives and friends. Lo Porto – explained Gentiloni – lost his life last January during a bombardment by US drones”. It is very important to understand when the news of his death was received in order to calm controversies rose yesterday in the Parliament. The Minister confirmed Matteo Renzi’s statement saying that Obama informed the Premier “on April 22, in the late evening”.
The news was given to our government and publically released in America as soon as it was verified. It took three months because the situation was very peculiar as the area was not accessible to the compound to identify corpses. Italy is aware of the truthfulness of the President who personally gave the news so that he could apologize publically”.
Italy and USA have a strong relation and Gentiloni was glad that they “were as truthful as possible. The tragic mistakes – he underlined – that the USA President admitted did not change the government’s decision in fighting terrorism. This is a serious menace, we need our allies to support all the forces that are in the fields, and the Italian Parliament and population need unity”. Magistrates opened an investigation about Lo Porto’s death.
