A 15-meters asteroid almost touched the earth this morning. The meteorite passed 75 km away from our planet, 1/5 of the distance of the moon from the earth. 2015 HD1 (this is the asteroid’s name) was discovered some days ago. The astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the virtual Telescope said its passage was ‘very close’. Yesterday night it was most visible.
This asteroid is very similar to the one that, in 2013, passed beyond the atmosphere causing rain of meteorites on the Russian city Chelyabinsk. This time there was no risk of impact although it was very near to the earth, it did not cross the atmosphere. Its passage was an occasion to better study these mysterious objects. Nevertheless, because it was travelling at a speed of about 60,000 km/h and because of its dimensions, it was only possible to see it with 40-cm-width telescopes.
